Our Organic Movement

Tea has been reported to have refreshing, calming and healthy benefits. Drinking tea will make people feel pleasant because of its charming aroma and flavor. It has become an important daily drink for many people as they think it will keep them healthy. However, most people who like tea are not mainly on the basis of Organic Farminghealth reason; in fact, the major inducement is its fantastic aroma and flavor. To satisfy with more and more critical drinkers, most tea growers extensively use pesticides and chemical fertilizer to enhance their tea’s quality and output. Ironically, this not only breaks local ecology environments but also leads to an excess of pesticide residue in their tea produce. People who think tea is a healthy drink are actually getting sick or cancers after drinking it over a long period of time.

In view of tea’s safety and environmental ecology protection, TC Formosa Tea has converted some of our tea farms to organic farming since years ago. For those farms that are not qualified to be an organic tea farm due to adjacent environmental limits, we will emphasize on safety usage of pesticides and chemical fertilizer. In response to overseas Formosa tea lovers who also seek for organic quality, we have been trying to export organic tea to North America and European countries. Unfortunately, we failed to export it in the name of organic tea due to Taiwan’s organic certificates are not recognized by these countries. It indeed frustrated our organic movement very much.

To have a breakthrough of this organic movement, we decided to start certifying one of our organic tea farms according to USDA/NOP and (EC) 834/07 standards as well. Finally, we have the first organic tea farm that is also certified by USDA/NOP and (EC) 834/07 standards in late 2009. It is also a double-proof for the tea’s quality and safety from this organic tea farm. We know it’s not a single lucky case but just a beginning. We will continue to invite more organic tea farmers to fulfill the same achievement. Hopefully, Taiwan’s organic tea movement will be inspired because of our successful connection to international tea market.

Introduction

Introduction

Jia Tian Organic Tea Farm is situated at the peak of Song-Bo-Ling area which is Taiwan's renowned tea district in Ming-Jian Township of Nantou County. Song-Bo-Ling belongs to the southernmost area of Introduction Organic Tea Farmmountain Bagua range. Tea planted here is nourished by fresh air, sufficient raindrop, rich soil, mid sunlight as well as foggy morning and night, the best environment to grow tea.

The farm's owner Mr. Chen Jun Lung was originally a public servant. After his parents were too old to manage the tea farm, he quitted his job and inherited the tea farm accordingly. In fact, he’s more enjoyable to be a tea farmer. Since he fully agreed with organic farming and worried about the pesticide damages against to tea farmers and drinkers. He started to manage the tea farm according to Taiwan’s organic standards from 1998. However, it actually brought a big difficulty to Chen at beginning. He had a very hard life due to almost no tea output in the first 2 years. The harvest was going down dramatically due to no use of chemical fertilizer and pesticide. Fortunately, Mrs. Chen who is a schoolteacher fully supports Chen's organic movement. Although her salary was barely enough for daily expenses, while it was good enough for Chen to continue his organic movement without disturbances.

Chen's insistence and hard works finally yielded positive results from the 3rd year after the movement. The tea trees in the organic tea farm were thriving gradually; the tea's quality was greatly enhanced accordingly. Besides, Chen also improved pest-catchers that were used at his tea farm in the first 2 years. These catchers help to kill most tea pests without any pollution; the farm's output was remarkably increased thereafter. Most tea farmers will not permit weeds existing at their tea farms, while Chen takes it naturally instead. Normally, Chen will cover and depress the weeds nearby the tea trees with unneeded tea branches and old leaves. For those overgrown weeds, he will remove it by his hands directly.

Because of Chen’s efforts, a small ecological environment at his tea farm is created. You can easily find crickets and earthworms from the soil of the tea farm. Ladybugs, spiders and even bird’s nests are easily found among the tea trees. Sometimes in the weekend, Chen’s friends will take their kids to his tea farm to experience natural scenery. The owners of adjacent tea farms were surprised by the green and thriving tea trees without using any pesticide and chemical fertilizer at his tea farm, they then followed his organic farming methods thereafter.

This is Jia Tian Organic Tea Farm. It is unlike other tea farms with a neat and clean facade. People may ask “Why weeds are everywhere?” As a matter of fact, these weeds can be used as natural fertilizer. Besides, weeds are also an important plant to comprise a natural ecological environment.

You know what it is?
It’s cricket’s cave. That means crickets are living inside the cave. Crickets can help to loose the soil so that the tea trees will be easier to absorb organic fertilizers.
A pest is in above picture. Crickets and spiders will help to eat tea pests.

Pests will eat tea leaves. But, do not hurry to kill these pests by yourself. Spiders will make a spiderweb to kill these pests before they bring out a big trouble. This will help tea trees to grow better and reach to an ecological balance.
